Shevaré
For contemporary artist and storyteller Shevaré Perry, who knew that trips to Saks Fifth Avenue as a child where her mom hastened her with pep talks to “be quiet when we get inside” would lead to the store’s very first bold art installation. Shevaré’s exhibition She is Her I Am She now graces its walls with imaginative poetry combined with mixed media interpretations both loud and with color. Upon entry you are met with an eye-catching multimedia portrait of model Beverly Johnson wrapped with her famous quote “Once a supermodel, always a supermodel.” A statement that seems to set the tone for the rest of the visual journey. Shevaré’s collection is a depiction of trail blazers, legends, and most importantly women who demonstrated timeless elegance and grace through the challenges of life.
Similar to the innovative style and unconventional artistry of the African American women she highlights, Shevaré’s art and poetic titles are layered with social consciousness. Each work was inspired by her poems and created to serve as an impetus to drive intellectual conversations. Conversations that hopefully will spark the viewer to examine the relationship between the artist’s poetic prowess and mixed media.
